Our mission is to rescue and treat Varanasi’s injured and sick street animals, reduce street dog overpopulation and rabies through Animal Birth Control & vaccination, and inspire community action to bring lasting change for the animals of Varanasi. Varanasi or Banaras (also known as Kashi and the City of Light) is one of the oldest living cities in the world. Mark Twain, who was inspired by the legend and sanctity of Banaras, once wrote: “Banaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together” A popular destination for Hindu devotees and international tourists, this holy city’s streets are populated with countless cows, buffaloes, beautiful Pariah dogs, cats, donkeys, and monkeys.
In the holy City of Light, many street dogs, cows, monkeys, and donkeys experience injury and illness. Others suffer from animal cruelty. With no government animal hospitals to help, too many suffer and die. We are their lifeline. Every day we answer calls to help animals who are sick or injured and provide life-saving care.
Thousands of beautiful Pariah (Desi) dogs live on the streets of Varanasi! The tradition of caring for community dogs dates back thousands of years in India. But, sadly, in our modern times, sickness, injury, and starvation kill most when they are just puppies. While we aim to rescue as many as possible, prevention is key to reducing suffering. How many street dogs can one female dog (and her puppies) produce in six years? 67,000!
Our rescue team may need to pick up the animal in one of our two ambulances and transport it back to our clinic for surgery and other care. In some cases, we can provide care on-site. This is especially true for larger animals like cows, bulls, and donkeys. In other cases, it is best if you can bring the injured or sick animal to our clinic. Contact us first. Our rescue team can advise on the best option.
